An advertisement to the rear board notes the Dean's Chromo Toy Books 'are acknowledged. to be the most beautifully-executed Toy Books at the price in the market. They have already been copied in America, France and Germany and are selling for double the price issued here&apos. Advertised as originally being sold at a sixpence each and printed on untearable cloth rather than paper. This work, in rhyming verse, appears to describe the life of several children living in a rural area. This work is unpaginated, and comprises of three leaves, and five pages. With the first and last page printed on pastedowns. Dean and Son were best known for their toy books and were the first firms to introduce pop-up books for children. 'Toy Books' were popular Victorian children's books. Characteristically Toy Books were paper bound with six illustrated pages and sold for sixpence. Dean and Son were the first firm to use chromolithography rather than hand coloured designs. In original pictorial paper covered boards. Externally, smart, with some loss to the tail of front and rear joint and to the tail of spine. Some minor bumping to extremities and a few handling marks. Gift inscription to top of front board ' J H Coelett Window from Willy.' Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot throughout.
