The Royal Historical Society by Marion Gibbs - Early Charters of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, London Camden Third Series Volume LVIII

Title: Early Charters of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, London Camden Third Series Volume LVIII
Description: London , Offices of the Royal Historical Society, 1939. Cloth. Early Charters of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, London from Camden Third Series Volume LVIII. Edited for the Royal Historical Society by Marion Gibbs. St Paul's Cathedral, London, is a Church of England cathedral and seat of the Bishop of London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. England's first classical architect, Inigo Jones, added the cathedral's west front in the 1630s, but there was much defacing mistreatment of the building by Parliamentarian forces during the Civil War, when the old documents and charters were dispersed and destroyed. "Old St Paul's" was gutted in the Great Fire of London of 1666. While it might have been salvageable, albeit with almost complete reconstruction, a decision was taken to build a new cathedral in a modern style instead. Indeed this had been contemplated even before the fire. In a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart but with slight fading to spine and wear to extremities and odd slight marks to boards. Front hinge strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Generally bright and clean throughout but with institutional labels and ink stamps. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
