The English Poor Laws were a system of poor relief which existed in England and Wales that developed out of late-medieval and Tudor-era laws before being codified in 1587–98. The Poor Law system was in existence until the emergence of the modern welfare state after the Second World War. English Poor Law legislation can be traced back as far as 1536, when legislation was passed to deal with the impotent poor, although there is much earlier Tudor legislation dealing with the problems caused by vagrants and beggars. Richard Burn (1709 in Winton, Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland, England – November 12, 1785 in Orton) was an English legal writer and noted antiquarian. Only two leaves to signature A, as usual. Collated complete from the ESTC, citation number T70490. Rebound in a cloth-covered binding with new endpapers. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Internally, binding loosening in places with many pages detached, though all pages are present. Small amount of corrective fluid to title page and highlighter ink to some text on approximately thirty pages. Incision to textblock affecting pages 105 onwards.
