Author: George Keate Title: The Distressed Poet, a Serio-Comic Poem, in Three Cantos
Description: London , J. Dodsley, 1787. First edition. Cloth. A very scarce first edition of Keate's partly humorous poem, dating from the late eighteenth-century. First Edition. George Keate (1729-1797) was an English poet and writer. Keate entered the Inner Temple in 1751 and was called to the bar in 1753. Although he never practised law, finding the work tedious, he retained his chambers and attended regularly there throughout his life, becoming bencher in 1791 and reader (an honorific title) in 1794. Despite this loyalty to his professional background, Keate felt a keen longing from early manhood for the life of letters and art, as can be seen in six poems composed in 17513; they include "A Pastoral Ode to Echo" in the tradition of Milton's "L'allegro". DNB. In a cloth binding. Externally, excellent with just minor shelfwear only. Internally, firmly bound. Some scattered foxing. Small tear to the margin of the title and first page. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
