William Cowper - The Diverting History of John Gilpin Shewing How He Went Farther Than He Intended and Came Safe Home Again

Title: The Diverting History of John Gilpin Shewing How He Went Farther Than He Intended and Came Safe Home Again
Description: London , Longmans Green and Co, c1868 . Cloth. A scarce telling of the journey taken by the fictional character John Gilpin, written in rhythmical verse. Illustrated throughout by H. Fitz-Cook and engraved by J.C.Whymper. There are a number of sites commemorating the exploits of John Gilpin, most notably Gilpin's Gallop, a street in the village of Stanstead St Margarets said to be on the original route taken by John Gilpin on his unintended journey. The poem was originally published anonymously in the Public Advertiser in 1782, and then published with The Task in 1785. It was very popular, to the extent that pirate copies were being sold all across the country, together with Gilpin books and toys. In original cloth binding with gilt motif to the front board. Externally, sound with light rubbing to extremities and shelfwear to the spine. Both hinges are slightly strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound with bright pages. Light scattered foxing to the first and last pages. Copperplate ink inscription to endpaper, and previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good . Ill.: H. Fitz-Cook. Very Good .
