Jean de La Fontaine was a renowned French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the seventeenth century. Whilst he is primarily remembered for his Fables (that rank among the greatest masterpieces of French literature, and provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe) he also produced many miscellaneous writings in both poetic forms and dramatic pieces, many of which appear in these two volumes. Illustrated throughout with engravings by and after Eisen, Lancret, Boucher, Pater and more, printed from the original copper-plates. Collated, complete with sixty four engravings on copper to volume I, and fifty nine engravings on copper to volume II. "Of this edition of La Fontaine's Tales only a limited number will be printed, and the Society undertake that it shall never be reprinted. To make that certain, directly after printing a number of the plates will be destroyed and others distributed among the subscribers."- Verso of title page. In a cloth binding with gilt detail. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to extremities and spine. Marks to boards of vol I and watermarks to front board and spine of vol II. Internally, firmly bound.
