George Frederick Halse was a banker and employee of Messrs Drummond who had wide-ranging artistic interests; developing a reputation as a sculptor, illustrator and writer. His published works included novels, poems and verse stories, several of which (including this work), were illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne. Collated, complete with fourteen in-text wood illustrations, and four engraved steel plates (including the frontispiece plate and the illustrated title page) by Hablot K. Browne, otherwise known as Phiz. Plate number 3 'Aberration' has been misbound facing page 48, rather than page 84. With publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. In a cloth binding with gilt lettering and decoration, rebacked with original boards and spine. Externally worn, with bumping and rubbing to extremities and slight loss to spine. Rear hinge failed and the front hinge strained. Internally, binding loosening in places. Half title page partially detached. Pages age toned to extremities, with the odd spot. Fair . Ill.: Hablot K.
