Title: University of Illinois Studies in Language and Literature Vol. XI February, 1926 No. 1 the Child Actors
Description: Illinois, The University of Illinois Press, 1926. Paperback. A scarce copy of Harold Hillebrand's 'The Child Actors', including a handwritten letter by the author. In a brown paperback with black lettering. No. 1 only. Harold Newcomb Hillebrand was a professor of English literature who became a notable member of the English Department at the University of Illinois from 1914, and became head of the department from 1934 to 1944. His primary research interest was theatre and playwriting, and his study of the celebrated British Shakespearean stage actor Edmund Kean is often considered to be the best biography about the actor. Indeed, the text provided the first scholarly examination of the evidence on Kean's parentage, birth, and upbringing. This text similarly demonstrated Hillebrand's interest in actors of the Shakespearean stage, yet focuses rather on an array of 'Child Actor's rather than one sole figure like Kean. A brown paperback with black lettering. Externally worn to the extremities, including rubbing, tears, splitting and scuffing. Tape to the spine coming away with sections missing. Internally, binding is loose with the text block detached from cover. Pages generally clean and bright with some minor spotting throughout and the occasional handling marks. Some of the corners are folded slightly. Pencil and ink markings to margins. Front endpaper slightly browned with ink inscription. Tipped in letter by author. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
