The comprehensive journals of the Goncourt brothers, Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, both French naturalism writers and collaborative sibling authors. The Goncourt brothers formed a partnership that is often viewed as unique in literary history. The brothers wrote their books together and did not spend time apart during their adult lives. They were only parted by the death of Jules in 1870. They are known for their literary work and for their diaries, which offer an intimate view into the French literary society of the later 19th century. The Goncourt brothers' career as writers began with an account of a sketching holiday together. They published books on aspects of 19th century French art and society, dismissing the vulgarity of the Second Empire in favour of a more refined age. They also published six novels of which one was based on the true case of their own maidservant, Rose Malinger, whose lived a double life. On his death, Edmond de Goncourt bequeathed his entire state for the foundation and maintenance of the Academie Goncourt which still awards one of the most important literary prizes in French Literature. Uniformly bound in half crushed morocco bindings by Louis Conard and original paper wraps bound in. Externally, very smart with some light rubbing and bumping. Internally, firmly bound.
