Samuel Jebb, d. 1772, was a physician and scholar. "He was educated at Mansfield grammar school, and Peterhouse, Cambridge. He was intended for the church, but being a nonjuror he was unable to take orders. He remained at Cambridge at least until 1718, when he became librarian to Jeremy Collier in London and began to occupy himself with literary work.. Possibly the death of Collier in 1726 had something to do with Jebb's change of profession, for he commenced the study of medicine, attending Mead's private practice, and also learning chemistry and pharmacy.. Jebb took the degree of MD in 1728 and set up as a physician where he combined medical practice with his literary work.. He did not become a licentiate of the College of Physicians until 1751."
