Author: Eugene Hatin Title: Histoire Politique Et Litteraire de la Presse En France
Description: Paris, Pulet-Malassis et de Broise, 1859-61. First edition. Leather. The first edition of this complete collection of eight volumes concerning the history of the press in France, in the original French. A eight volume set of this French-language history of the press in France, in attractive half-morocco bindings. Written by Eugene Hatin, a noted French historian, journalist and bibliographer of the Nineteenth Century, the volumes make for a comprehensive and detailed history of French journalism, and were considered to have little foreign equivalent at the time. Including sections on the origins of newspapers in France and the use of political posters, the work generally takes a chronological approach, detailing the impact that the press would have on the French Revolution, The French Empire and the Bourbon Restoration, and up until the political upheavals of 1848. Includes the institutional bookplate of Bibliotheque Guille-Alles to boards, a French library in Guernsey, as well as the bookbinders' label of Alexandre David of Paris. In decorative half-morocco bindings with gilt detailing. Externally sound, there is wear to extremities, joints and back strip, as well as markings to boards. The hinges are strained in some instances and there are institutional bookplates adhered to each front board. Internally, the pages are generally firmly bound and are largely bright and clean, although there is foxing to endpapers and the odd spot throughout. There are institutional labels to pastedown.
