Pierre Corneille is widely celebrated as one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists alongside Moliere and Jean Racine. His work was mainly tragedies and were incredibly popular with contemporaries. Jean Rotrou was also a tragedian, popular for his adhesion of the Spanish model of learning. He wrote several plays over his seventeenth century career. Paul Scarron was a poet, dramatist and novelist. He was the first husband of Francoise d'Aubigne who later secretly married King Louis XIV of France. With a short biography of the playwrights to the start of each text. The works are presented in in chronological order with a short discussion of each play after the text. There are eight works of Scarron and seven of Rotrou. The first three volumes are the complete works of Corneille. In half morocco bindings with gilt stamping to the spines. Volumes I-III of Corneille are uniformly bound with comic faces gilt stamped to spines. The extra two volumes of Rotrou and Scarron's work in similar bindings with a tragic gilt stamped face and different paper for the paper covered boards. Externally, very smart with a small amount of rubbing to the head and tail of spines as well as to the raised bands. The gilt stamping to Rotrou is faded slightly from rubbing also. Front board to Rotrou is warped slightly. Front hinge to volume III of Corneille slightly strained but firm after first few pages. Front hinge to volume II of Corneille is slightly strained but firm after the first few pages. Front hinge to volume I of Corneille is slightly strained but firm. First gathering to volume II of Corneille is tender. Gathering 468-470 is disbound to volume I of Corneille. Otherwise, all volumes are generally firmly bound. Pages are age toned with scattered spots throughout. Pencil notations from a prior owner to the Scarron volume. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
