In 1644, she married the Marquess of Svign, an aristocrat of modest means and standing but excellent breeding. She is remembered throughout France for the rapacious vivacity and humour of her letters (addressed in the main to her daughter). Here we have two volumes, containing a very extensive editors preface by Ph. A. Grouvelle, and some 290 of her witty letters - an excellent start for any student of French literature. These volumes date from one of the earliest modern editions, and are handsomely bound in lovely leather with gilt eding and lovely embellishment. Externally, bound in in old mottled calf. Sound with some rubing. Nice patina with embellished spines and gilt eding. Some wear to extremities; head and tail of spine; and along joints. Hinges split and held by twine binding only. Internally, firmly bound. Some spotting throughout. Tidemarks to tops of pastedowns. Good Only . Ill.: Not stated. Good Only .
