Philippe-Antoine Merlin de Douai - Recueil Des Discours, Sur la Question de la Reunion de la Belgique a la France, Imprimes Par Ordre de la Convention Nationale.

Title: Recueil Des Discours, Sur la Question de la Reunion de la Belgique a la France, Imprimes Par Ordre de la Convention Nationale.
Description: Paris, Journal du Commerce, 1797. First edition. Hardback. A very scarce French first edition of this work on the issue of the union of Belgium and France. Written by French politician and lawyer Phillipe-Antoine Merlin de Douai, the essay is an interesting document of the French Revolution and the abrupt change in political discourse in both domestic and foreign matters. Merlin was himself a revolutionary, but did not advocate violence in the same manner as many of his contemporaries, although he did vote for the execution of King Louis XVI. He was later banished, among many others, in the Second Bourbon Restoration. In paper covered boards. Externally sound, though with tender joints and hinges and wear to extremities and backstrip. Internally, the pages are firmly bound, but are foxed and faded throughout. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
