He was admitted to the Académie française in 1894, and in 1895 was promoted to be an officer of the Légion d'honneur, having received the decoration of the order ten years before. He was very popular during his time and has had a lasting effect on French literature. One of his poems was the inspiration for a song by Debussy titled Beau Soir. These volumes contain the bookplate of Elizabeth Sherman Cameron (1860-1944), who was a significant member of Washington society in the 1870's, and friends with Edith Wharton. She married Senator James Donald Cameron in 1878 but later became estranged from her husband and moved to Europe with their daughter, Martha. She was thought to have had a long-term affair with Henry Adams, grandson of John Quincy Adams. The text is in French. Bound in half leather with marble paper-covered boards and gilt lettering and decoration. Externally, There is some wear to the extremities including some bumping to the corners. Internally the pages are generally clean with the occasional brown spot or handling mark. There is a bookplate (described above) on the front pastedown. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
