The character Raffles, first created in the 1890s, is often regarded as an inversion of the sleuth Sherlock Holmes, created by Hornung's brother in law Arthur Conan Doyle. Raffles supports his lavish London lifestyle and career as a cricketer by carrying out ingenious burglaries.
