Translated from the original Latin of Sir Torbern Bergman by Edmund Cullen. Torbern Olaf Bergman (1735 – 1784) was a Swedish chemist and mineralogist noted for his 1775 Dissertation on Elective Attractions, containing the largest chemical affinity tables ever published. Bergman was the first chemist to use the A, B, C, etc. system of notation for chemical species. With five fold-out plates and tables to volume one, including a Synoptical Table, and two fold-out plates to volume two. Collated and Complete. Scarce. Re-bound in quarter-calf bindings. Externally very smart with some shelfwear only. Internally firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages throughout - minor browning due to age, with some tidemarks to the rear of volume 2.
