Richard Field (1561-1616) was an English ecclesiological theologian associated with the work of Richard Hooker. Field was a close friend and associate of Hooker, who was the pre-eminent Anglican theologian of his day, and one of the most influential figures in Anglican history. Field's major work, Of the Church (1606), was an affirmation of the Church of England against the Roman Catholic Church. Field maintained that Anglican piety and polity continued the pre-Tridentine Catholic conciliar tradition. "Field's principal work, Of the Church, Five Bookes, was first published in London in 1606, printed by Humfrey Lownes and dedicated to the archbishop of Canterbury, Richard Bancroft. In fact this volume contained only the first four books. Another impression, with many errata corrected, was printed by Nicholas Okes, probably in 1614, but still dated 1606 on the title-page, and with the printer's name omitted." - DNB In a full vellum binding. Externally, smart. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some discolouration. Internally, firmly bound. the pages are bright, with some handling marks. There are ink inscriptions on the title page and the occasional ink marking throughout the text. There are some tidemarks that do not encroach on the text. Page 179's corner is torn away with slight loss to a few letters of text on the following page. There are water stains from page 61 to 81, with damage to pages 67 to 69, as shown in the photograph above where pages have stuck together but repairable with skill. There is slight evidence of past worming. There is a closed tear to the title page, which can be easily repaired. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
