Complete in two volumes. Very scarce work. Last seen at auction in 1915.Written by Anglo-Irish author, T. M. Hughes, or Terence MacMahon Hughes, known for his travel works, in particular those surrounding Spanish history. A fascinating early travel work documenting the author's experiences as he journeyed from London to Lisbon in the mid nineteenth-century. Hughes details his views on many European towns and cities as he travelled through them, including Normandy, Madrid, Merida, and many others. Notably, Hughes comments on the politics, art, literature, national characteristics and government controversies of Portugal, highlighting the various "extraordinary misrepresentations" surrounding the counter-movement which led to poisoning of the public mind in England. Bound in the publisher's red cloth, rebacked and with the spine laid down. Externally, sound, with bumping to the extremities and marks to cloth. Rubbing to joints, with some splits to the cloth and loss to the backstrip tail. Hinges have been reinforced to I, which is a little tight to the rear. Endpapers renewed, with an ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with just the odd mark. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
