With surveys of archaeological finds including fragments of Anglo-Saxon coffin lids and monumental slabs. Written by English archaeologist and antiquary, Charles Boutell. Heavily illustrated throughout the text with engravings of the objects. This copy was previously owned by Thomas Nadauld Brushfield (1828-1910). He was a pioneer of non-restraint treatment in asylums, focusing on ways to lighten the patients' life by making the wards cheerful and organising entertainments. He later focused on the life and works of Sir Walter Raleigh, who features on his bookplate. Rebacked with the original cloth boards and remaining head of original spine laid in. Externally, with fading and damp stains to the boards. With slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Bookplates of T. N. Brushfield and F. T. J. Houghton to the front pastedown.
