During the Great War, Churchill served as First Lord of the Admiralty, which almost cost him his political career when he was scapegoated for the disaster of the Dardanelles at Gallipoli and forced to resign. He gained favour again before the end of the war and re-joined the Government. With one uniform title page to part one. In the original paper wraps. Externally, sound with light wear and the odd crease to the extremities, with further creasing to the front panel of volume one. Sunning to the spines with light chipping to the head and tail of the spines resulting in light loss to most volumes. The odd small closed tear to the panel edges. Hinges starting but firm, with the hinges of volumes three, four, nine, and twenty-two tender. Hinges failed to volumes five, eight, and ten, with the boards of volume ten detached but present. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. The odd small crease to the page edges with minor age toning to the extremities.
