A very scarce 1940s copy of Maurus Jokai's historical novel set in seventeenth century Transylvania, rebound in paper wraps in a wartime "Save Paper" campaign. An uncommon novel in all contemporary English language editions, Jokai's work was first published in the original Hungarian in 1852, but not translated into English until 1894.The novel depicts intricate conspiracies involving noble families amid the tumultuous political landscape of seventeenth century Transylvania. Published prior to the 1940s, this copy has had the original title page removed, and has been rebound in paper wraps by "Everybody"s Rebound", run by the publishers Everybody"s Books. To the front wrap, they explain 'This is a rebound copy of a book worth reading published by a well-known publisher. We are rebinding books such as this in order that as many books as possible may do their job twice and so help the vital "Save Paper" Campaign&apos. In the publisher's original paper wraps. With the title stamped to the title page head and back strip, by the publisher. Back strip lightly age toned, with light edgewear to back strip head. Internally, firmly bound.
