 - Days with Sir Roger de Coverley

Title: Days with Sir Roger de Coverley
Description: London, Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1886. Cloth. A very smart copy of this illustrated work about the fictional character Sir Roger de Coverley. Reprinted from The Spectator, a daily publication founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele lasting from 1711 to 1712. It was developed with the aim "to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality". Illustrated with a frontispiece and numerous in-text images. A collection of connected stories of English squire of Queen Anne's reign, Sir Roger de Coverley. Coverley exemplified the values of an old country gentleman, and was portrayed as lovable but somewhat ridiculous, making his Tory politics seem harmless and silly. Written by Joseph Addison, an English essayist, poet, playwright, and politician. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson, an Irish illustrator best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. The odd small mark to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot. Minor age toning to the extremities. Very Good . Ill.: Hugh Thomson. Very Good .
