Frederika Bremer; E. A. Friedlaender [trans.] - Nina

Title: Nina
Description: London, H. G. Clarke and Co. 1844. Leather. A complete two-volume set of 'Nina', Fredrika Bremer's sequel to 'The President's Daughters', translated into English and uniformly bound in full calf. An early English language edition of this work in two volumes, uniformly bound in full calf bindings with marbled end papers and edges. Gilt detailing to the spines. The sequel to The President's Daughter, the novel Nina attempts to continue the tale in Bremer's realistic style, with the addition of speculative philosophy inspired by Johan Boklin. This novel was written by Fredrika Bremer (1801-1865), a Finnish-born Swedish writer and reformer whose works were wildly popular in the UK and US during the 1840s and 1850s. Regarded as the Swedish Jane Austen, she is credited with bringing the realist novel to Sweden. Her novel Hertha prompted a social movement that granted unmarried Swedish women legal majority at the age of twenty-five, and she opened Sweden's first female tertiary school. Translated from the Swedish by E. A. Friedlaender, this is a very scarce English language edition of this novel published by H. G. Clarke and Co. Uniformly bound in full calf bindings. Externally, sound. Damp staining and marks to the boards. Light shelf wear to the spines and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
