Not recorded by the ESTC'The Spectator' was a daily publication founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele in England, originally running from 1711 to 1712, and collected into seven volumes. The paper was revived for six months in 1714, forming the eighth volume. The 'Spectator' became a major venue for the spread of Enlightenment ideas, and was one of the first publications to appeal directly to a female readership.Addison estimated that during its initial run, about a tenth of London's population were readers of the publication.Addison and Steele founded several publications during their friendship, including the literary and social journal "Tatler", which published from 1709 to 1711. Steele also founded the short lived "The Guardian". None of these publications are related to the modern day ones which share their same names. In full calf bindings. Back strips age toned, with small losses of calf to back strips. Volume I joints starting, with front board tenderly held by one cord only, and rear board firmly held. Front joint of vol IV starting with board firmly held. Volume V joints starting, with front board very tender. Front joint of volume VI starting with board tender. Volume III lacking endpapers and blanks. Internally, firmly bound. Light tide marks to first and last few leaves of volumes V-VIII, with pages otherwise lightly age toned, with the odd spot.
