Volume two is illustrated with twenty-eight plates. Collated complete. A detailed study of the Empire of China and its inhabitants. With chapters on early European and English intercourse, Chinese history, government and legislation, manners and customs, important cities, religion, language and literature, arts and inventions, sciences, commerce, and much more. Written by Sir John Francis Davis, a British diplomat and sinologist who served as second Governor of Hong Kong and the first President of Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong. Previously held in the library of Samuel Gurney Buxton, of the Gurney family, an influential family of English Quakers, who had a major part in the development of Norwich, England. They established Gurney's Bank in 1770, which merged into Barclays Bank in 1896, as well as establishing many successful breweries. A number of family members were abolitionists. In the original full green cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Light fraying to the cloth in places with loss to the head and tail of the spines. Further loss to the head of the spine of volume two. Fading to the spines and board edges with the odd small mark. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Lacking the front free endpaper to volume one. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and minor age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good .
