R. - Spring at 4m inchs as surv'd - 17th Octr 189' depicting a spring, possibly on the proposed construction route of the tunnel. The Severn Tunnel was opened by Great Western Railway in 1886. They begun work on the tunnel, which measures at 7,008 metres long, in 1873, to link South Gloucestershire to Monmouthshire, and remained the longest underwater tunnel in the world for a century A booklet held together with a split pin.
