Thomas Bewick - A General History of the Quadrupeds

Title: A General History of the Quadrupeds
Description: Newcastle Upon Tyne, S. Hodgson, R. Beilby, & T. Bewick, 1791 . Leather. The second edition, noted for being much larger and more illustrated, of Thomas Bewick's celebrated work, 'A History of Quadrupeds&apos. A second, much larger and improved edition, published just a year after the first. This late eighteenth-century work describes two-hundred and sixty mammals from across the world, looking at domestic animals, such as horses and cows, as well as animals such as jackals and polecats. Illustrated and written by Thomas Bewick, an English artist and author recognised for his natural history works, notably A History of British Birds. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Ralph Beilby, an engraver in Newcastle, before becoming a company partner once his training concluded. Containing numerous striking in-text wood engravings by the author. Bewick's art is considered the pinnacle of its medium; unlike his predecessors, Bewick utilised fine tools normally favoured by metal engravers. This proved to be far superior, and has been the dominant method used since. With the bookplate of Henry Brady, a British micropalaeontologist hailing from Gateshead. Bound in half morocco with paper-covered boards. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to extremities, boards and joints. Hinges are a touch strained, but holding firm. Bookplate to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with the occasional area of light scattered spotting, predominantly to the first and last few pages. Good . Ill.: Thomas Bewick. Good .
