In 1804, he quarrelled with his friend, Captain Best, over a woman who Pit was favouring who had previously been Best's mistress. Pitt challenged Best to a duel, leading to Best shooting Pitt through his rib, lungs, and spine, dying of his injuries three days later.Sir William Cockburne was Dean of York, and was accused, and acquitted, of simony.
