A very scarce first English edition of this work in a half paper vellum binding, with gilt detailing to the spine, marbled boards and marbled end papers. Top edge gilt.Previous owner's bookplate to the front paste down.Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, a title page vignette, and a plate of sheet music. Collated, complete.First written in 1807, this short story was not published until 1826, due to the controversial depiction of the Spaniards in the work. It was published simultaneously in Paris and in an English-language edition in the UK. A story of chivalry and love, this work was written by François-René de Chateaubriand (1768-1848), who had a huge influence over French literature and inspired a generation of Romantic writers. In a half paper vellum binding. Externally, very smart and bright, with very light shelf wear to the joints and extremities. Front hinge is starting but remains firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd handling mark, and a scattering of spots to the frontispiece and title page. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
