Description: Manchester, Manchester University Press, 1907-1942. First edition. Paperback. A four-volume set of works on the special collection of the John Rylands Library, Manchester, by Librarian Henry Guppy. A four-volume set in the publisher's original paper wraps. The last three volumes are in yapp bindings.Loosely inserted to the 1933 volume are 1930s newspaper articles, concerning the treasures of the John Rylands Library.This set explores the books and broadsides of the John Rylands Library in Manchester. The John Rylands Research Institute and Library was founded by Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her husband, and was inaugurated in 1899, before opening to the public in 1900. It contains special collections on the history of printing, and owns the second largest collection of printing by William Caxton. These works were written and compiled by Henry Guppy, who was Librarian at the John Rylands Library between 1899 and 1948. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, generally smart. Small tears and creasing to the yapp bindings. A little sunning to the spines. Tear to the front joint and a scattering of spots to the front of the wrap of the 1921 volume. Damp stains to the upper extremities of the wraps to the 1942 volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with spotting to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page. The odd spot to the pages of the 1942 volume. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
