The debut novel of Frederick Howard, a journalist and author known for his novels surrounding Australia and for editing various periodicals throughout his career. Howard was born in London, but emigrated to Australia with his parents when he was 16, using this insight to inform his writing. 'The Emigrant' tells the story of a young man's progression from being a militant communist to achieving a new life as an individualist in Australia. Drawing upon Howard's personal experiences, this novel presents emigrant life in Australia, giving an insight of the "real Australia" to the rest of the world.
