Illustrated with three folding maps, a folding chart and eighteen further illustrations on wood and stone. Plate XIX is a different plate to that stated in the list of illustrations, with 'Crossing the Lukoji' in place of 'View of the House and Location of Messrs J. Hallett and H. Dixon. Otherwise, complete, adhering to the list of illustrations. An interesting study, exploring the history of Natal in South Africa, written twelve years after it was proclaimed a British colony. Despite the fact that much of this work is dedicated to early pioneers, the author also presents the role of the government and discusses the question of the Orange River Sovereignty. The colony of Natal covers the area now known as the KwaZulu-Natal province, with the region being combined with three other colonies to form part of the Union of South Africa in 1910. Written by William C. Holden, a British reverend who moved to the Cape Colony in 1839, known for being a pioneer of Methodism in Natal and delivering sermons within the community.With one page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Endpapers renewed. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd mark. Slight lifting to the spine label.
