Although this novel was originally published by Charles Scribner's Sons, at the time of publication there were wartime paper shortages, leading to some publishing companies collaborating to share resources. Charles Scribner's Sons joined forces with Philadelphia-based company Blakiston, leading to this scarce, wartime edition of 'For Whom The Bell Tolls&apos. Due to this collaboration, The Blakiston Company printing could use the original first edition design and was allowed to be published the same year. 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway drew on his own experiences as a journalist during the Spanish Civil War for the 'North American Newspaper Alliance&apos. This work is often regarded as one of Hemingway's best works.In the publisher's original black cloth variant, with the pictorial dust wrapper. This edition was also published in a maroon cloth variant. Bound in the publisher's black cloth, with the original dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with minor bumping to the extremities. Dust wrapper is smart, with chipping to the extremities and a few closed tears. A little loss to the backstrip head and tail and light rubbing to the wrap. Small clips to each flyleaf.
