A very scarce work.In the original portfolio, which is in a good only condition. Half-title is present.Two-hundred and three plates, of which ten are in colour, and four are folding. Collated, all plates are present; plates 329-529 are from Volume III, with the addition of plates 326, 327, and 328 from Volume II, covering the early Fujiwara period. This volume covers the sculpture, painting, and allied arts of the temples from the late Fujiwara, Kamakura, and Ashikaga periods. Volume III only of a total of III Volumes.All plates are unbound, as issued. Without the title page, which was included only in Volume I, publication info ascertained from Jisc.Compiled by The Department of the Interior Imperial Japanese Government to correspond with the Anglo-Japanese Exposition which was held in London between May and October, 1910. In addition, the compilers wished to show the vast amount of temples found in Japan, highlighting their need for protection from "wars, conflagrations and neglect". Published by The Shimbi Shoin, a Tokyo-based publishing house active between c1899 and 1936. During this period, The Shimbi Shoin established itself as one of the finest Japanese publishers of art reproductions, noted for their high quality and skill. They combined Japanese and European printmaking styles to create detailed images in colourful silk bindings. No expense was spared, with the illustrations hand printed by the finest artisans of the trade. Due to this stellar reputation and noted skill, Shimbi Shoin publications can be found in some of Japan's finest libraries and museums. In the original quarter cloth binding, with paper to the front board, and cloth to the rear board. Externally, worn. Cloth to the rear board is lifting. Loss to the head and tail of the spine.
