Collated, lacking one monochrome plate, and all fifteen hand coloured woodblocks.Author Josiah Conder served as official architect to the Imperial Japanese Government. He published a brief paper on the subject of ikebana in the Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan in 1889, prompting this work. Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, translates to "giving life to flowers". It' is based on the idea of bringing nature and humanity together, and is rooted in Chinese and Buddhist philosophy. In the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps. Lacking silk ties which should appear to wrap fore edges. Significant fraying to back strip, most concentrated to back strip head and tail. Major handling marks to wraps.
