The very scarce first edition of these two volumes.These two volumes - a complete work unto themselves - serve as supplements to the author's ten volume work 'Japan, Described and Illustrated By the Japanese&apos.Only 750 copies of this very scarce two volume work were produced.The work of Anglo-Irish newspaper owner, editor and scholar Francis Brinkley, who resided in Meiji period Japan for over 40 years.Volume I is dedicated to the pictorial art of Japan, and volume II to the country's applied art.Illustrated with five colour plates and twenty-six tipped in colour vignettes to volume I, and seven plates and twenty-six tipped in photographs. Collated, complete.With the Yedo Edition bookplate to each front pastedown, identifying the illustrations in these volumes as being from the collection of Michael Tomkinson. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth bindings. Externally, vibrant, but with back strips and board perimeters age toned. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Some leaves bright, but with instances of significant handling marks to page perimeters, and with foxing throughout volume II, most concentrated to page perimeters. Very Good . Ill.: Various.
