The piece includes portraits of many prominent writers and artists of the 1890s, including Richard Le Gallienne, Frank Harris, Rudyard Kipling, Aubrey Beardsley and George Bernard Shaw. Though humorous, the collection established Beerbohm's reputation as the cruelest caricaturist of his day. Illustrated by Sir Henry Maximilian Beerbohm, an English essayist, parodist and caricaturist under the signature Max who first became known in the 1890s as a dandy and a humorist. With an introduction from Leonard Raven-Hill, an English artist, illustrator and cartoonist. Previously held in the library of Samuel Courtauld, an English industrialist who is best remembered as an art collector and founder of The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. In the original blue cloth binding with gilt. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound.
