Two very scarce programmes for shows at the Gaiety Theatre.'The Grasshopper' by Meilhac and Halvey, adapted by John Hollingshead, and 'Little Doctor Faust', by Henry J. Byron, performed in 1878. 'Faust' is a comical farce based off Goethe's novel. 'Jack the Giant Killer' and 'Young Fra Diavolo', both by Henry J. Byron, performed in 1879. The Gaiety Theatre opened in 1864, located on the former site of the Lyceum. The theatre was known for introducing Edwardian music comedy to the public. At this time, the lessee of Gaiety was John Hollingshead. Under his management, the theatre became the first to install electric lighting in its auditorium. Henry James Byron was a prolific dramatist, who turned to the theatre after a short medical career. His father was the second cousin of Lord Byron. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, a little edge worn, 'Grasshopper' is more edge worn, with small chips and closed tears. Wraps are a little age-toned with light spots, and a few handling marks. Internally, unbound as issued. Pages are very lightly age-toned with a few spots. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
