Full bound in the original publisher's morocco leather.With five gilt decorated plate illustrations of Scottish landmarks appearing throughout the work, including a frontispiece portrait of Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott.This copy bearing a festive gift inscription: "Emma Westcott from Alice Lee Christmas 1870".Very scarce.This is a lovely illustrated pocket diary and almanack for the year 1871 furnished with all the essential information of the day such as a contemporary list of the sovereigns of Europe, of the members of the house of commons, and of cab fares in London. It also includes an initial short biography of Sir Walter Scott, the novelist, poet, and historian whose best known works include Ivanhoe (1819) and Rob Roy (1817). In the original publisher's full morocco leather binding. Externally, sound with rubbing, dust dulling and some minor handling marks. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities, in the former's case resulting in marginal cracks to and loss of the leather. One small patch of loss to the leather at the inner front cover. Endpapers are slightly discoloured. Gift inscription to the recto of the frontispiece. Internally, sections of the binding are strained. Pages are fractionally age toned with mild spotting, however are generally bright and clean barring some pencil annotations to the 'January' section.
