Title: The Frugal Housewife, Dedicated to Those Who Are Not Ashamed of Economy
Description: London, William Tegg and Co. 1853. Cloth. The twenty-third edition of this book containing recipes and advice for young housewives. Twenty-third edition. With a frontispiece. First published in 1829, the book was expanded and went through thirty-three printings in twenty-five years. Intended for those with lesser means, this informative book contains mostly recipes, but also advice for young housewives. It is centered around the idea that with any household chore you should "not spend all your money.. Begin humbly." Written by Lydia Maria Child, an American abolitionist, women's rights activist, Native American rights activist, novelist, journalist, and opponent of American expansionism. From the library of Jill Norman, an editor and food writer. Norman began working at Penguin in the early 1960s and, as the only woman, the care of the company's cookery books fell to her. It was her responsibility to expand the cookery titles Penguin produced, and thus began to publish works by Jane Grigson, Claudia Roden, and Alan Davidson. In particular Norman worked closely with the famed cookery writer Elizabeth David, with whom she was good friends. In the original red cloth binding. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Light loss to the spine at the head and tail with splits in the cloth to the spine and joints. Hinges just starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with minor age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
