Collated, complete. An exhaustive study of the changes in fashion from 1790 to 1914, from the modes of the French Revolution to the simplicity of the modern sporting kit. With detailed commentary on the relationship between politics and clothes, history and manners, scientific invention and the growth of democracy. Volume I covers the period from 1790 to 1817, volume II covers 1818 to 1842, volume III covers 1843 to 1878, and volume IV covers 1879 to 1914. From the German of Oskar Fischel, a German art historian and Max von Boehn, a German officer and art historian. Translated by M. Edwardes. With an introduction by Grace Rhys, an Irish writer. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor wear to the extremities only. Original unclipped dust wrappers are sound with light wear and the odd small closed tear to the extremities. Minor sunning to the spine with the odd small mark. Light loss to the head and tail of the spines with further loss to the tail of the spine of volume four. A 1" closed tear to the front panel of volume three and a large closed tear across the panel of volume four sympathetically repaired with tape to the internal side. Internally, firmly bound.
