First published in English in 1835, this work was inspired by a painting of he same name, by Russian artist Karl Briullov, which Bulwer-Lytton viewed in Milan not long prior. Illustrated with seven plates and a folding map to the rear. With a preface and notes by Francesco Cusani.With two bookplates, one of English artist James Hayllar, known for his landscape and portrait paintings, and the other of William Edward Kelly. Bound in full vellum. Externally, very good, with slight discolouration to vellum, as is common with this binding. A little bumped to spine head and tail. Bookplate and bookseller label to front paste down, with another bookplate to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
