Bound in full calf, rebacked with wooden boards.Very scarce work. A collection of biographies surrounding the apostles of Jesus Christ, mentioned in the bible, with two additional figures, being the evangelists St. Mark and St. Luke. The apostles mentioned include St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Andrew, St. James the Great, St. John, St. Philip, St. Bartholomew, St. Matthew, St. Thomas, St. James the Less, Simon the Zealot, St. Jude and St. Matthias. Each biography is accompanied by a striking full-page woodcut engraving, comprising fifteen plates altogether, as well as an additional engraved title page. Collated, complete. Written anonymously, although with a preface noted as being written by "P. D.". With two pages of publisher's advertisements following the preface. With the original endpapers and blanks retained. Bound in full calf, rebacked with wooden boards. Externally, slightly worn, with extensive worming to the boards and spine, causing loss to the leather. Hinges are slightly tender, with cords visible, although holding reasonably firm. Marks to endpapers. Paper lifting from the front paste down. Light chipping to the front free endpaper and first blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with a little age toning.
