The extreme punishments meted out on ill-mannered children are regularly more shocking than the 'crimes' themselves, with Conrad having his thumbs cut off with scissors after being warned not to suck on them.Illustrated with twenty-four pages of colour vignette illustrations accompanying the rhymes, including depictions of iconic characters such as Shock-Headed Peter, Harriet (of The Dreadful Story About Harriet and the Matches), and Little Suck-A-Thumb.
