The Bookman was a monthly magazine published in London from 1891 until 1934 by Hodder & Stoughton as a catalogue of the current publications with reviews, advertising and illustrations. Illustrations inspired by The Old Wives' Tale, a novel by prolific English author Arnold Bennett. The story follows the lives of two very different sisters, Constance and Sophia Baines, from their youth, working in their mother's draper's shop, into old age. It covers a period of about seventy years from roughly 1840 to 1905. Illustrated by John Morton Sale, an English visual artist and illustrator. In the original paper wraps. Externally, smart with minor wear and light sunning to the extremities. Small closed tears to the head and tail of the spine with a small crease to the front panel. Ink marks to the rear panel.
