Nine volumes bound in ten of a thirty-five volume set bound in forty. First edition. A series of volumes of the Domesday Book, a manuscript record of the Great Survey of much of England and parts of Wales completed in 1086 at the behest of King William the Conqueror. The manuscript was created to survey every shire in England, to list all of the King's holdings and dues owed to him. The Phillimore Edition is a parallel-text Latin and English edition of Great Domesday Book, published by the local-history specialist publishers Phillimore & Co. Each county occupies a separate volume. With a map or plan to the rear of each volume other than Domesday Book in the Classroom. Edited by John Robert Morris, an English historian who specialised in the study of the institutions of the Roman Empire and the history of Sub-Roman Britain. This set includes: Volume one - Kent, 1983. Volume three - Surrey, 1975. Volume eleven - Middlesex, 1975. Volume twelve - Hertfordshire, 1976. Volume sixteen - Worcestershire, 1982. Volume twenty-six - Cheshire, 1978. Volume thirty-two - Essex, 1983. Volume thirty-three - Norfolk, in two volumes, 1984. Domesday Book in the Classroom, 1982. Volumes one, three, sixteen, twenty-six, thirty-three, and the classroom guide are all bound in the original paper binding, with volumes eleven, twelve, and thirty-two all bound in the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with minor wear to the extremities and light sunning to the spines. A pricing sticker to the rear board of volume three with small marks to the front board of volume sixteen. The original dust wrappers remain unclipped other than volume eleven which has been price-clipped. Wrappers are very smart with minor wear. A library sticker to the tail of the spine of volume eleven. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small handling mark. Library bookplate and stickers to the front endpaper of volume eleven with an ink stamp. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpapers. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None.
