This very scarce edition of William Jones' early nineteenth-century Christian children's book, printed for the Society For Promoting Christian Knowledge, in decorative full cloth binding. This was a popular and thus oft-reprinted work, with the earliest catalogued edition having been printed for G. G. J. and J. Robinson, and sold by W. Keymer, Colchester, in 1788.This edition was printed for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in 1848.In full blind stamped cloth binding with gilt titling.With several charming monochrome vignette illustrations accompanying the text. A very scarce edition of the work. The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge is the oldest Anglican mission organisation in the world, having been founded by the English clergyman and abolitionist Thomas Bray in 1698. The Book of Nature is an illustrated and engaging guide to essential Christian principles that was intended for children, and was written by William Jones, a Welsh philologist and scholar of ancient India. In full blind stamped cloth binding with gilt titling. Externally, sound with rubbing and fading and to the cloth, heaviest to the front board and spine, and some minor marks. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine and the extremities resulting in marginal loss of cloth in these areas. Front hinge is a touch strained. Internally, firmly bound with pages that are a trifle age toned with scattered spotting and the occasional handling mark, as well one small closed tear to the rear free endpaper. Two previous owners' neat inscriptions to the front pastedown and to the top edge of the title page, respectively. Good . Ill.: None stated. Good .
