The first edition thus of this compilation. From The Chronicles and Memorials of Great Britain and Ireland during the Middle Ages, also widely known as the Rolls Series. Rebound in a pleasing full red cloth. With two folding facsimile plates. With three pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. The Liber Albus, divided into four books, is edited here by Henry Thomas Riley, an English translator, lexicographer and antiquary. This significant collection of documents was compiled in 1419 by the Town Clerk, John Carpenter, and is considered one of the first books of English common law. It records the laws and civic regulations relating to the City of London, beginning in 1067 but concentrating on the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It is written mostly in Latin, with parts in French. Rebound in full red cloth. Externally, excellent, with only minor shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with scattered spotting to the first and last few leaves (following and preceding the renewed blanks). With the odd pencil inscription from previous owner.
