The correspondence of Marie-Henri Beyle, better known by his pen name Stendhal, a French writer. Best known for the novels Le Rouge et le Noir (1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (1839), he is highly regarded for the acute analysis of his characters' psychology and considered one of the foremost practitioners of realism. Stendhal used many aliases in his autobiographical writings and correspondence, and often assigned pseudonyms to friends. It is believed that he used more than one-hundred pseudonyms, which were astonishingly diverse and usually comic to appear even more bourgeois than he truly was. One of his correspondents, Prosper Merimee, said "He never wrote a letter without signing a false name." Volume one contains letters from 1800-1805. Volume two contains letters from 1805-1808.
